Last year, this event was a hit!! Come on out and enjoy a delicious ice cream on a hot San Diego afternoon with us!!
Please keep in mind that our district has a wellness policy that restricts treats such as cupcakes. At the end of every month, we will designate the last Friday for parents to send in healthy snacks and/or non-food items (stickers, pencils, etc.). Snacks or other items will be passed out at dismissal on the last FRIDAY of every month to honor the birthdays of that month. We have 27 students in each class.

Below are a few pictures of what I have so far!!
Parents-- I look forward to meeting you on Tuesday evening at 4:30 p.m. Students-- I can't wait to meet every single one of you on Wednesday morning!! Enjoy these last few days with family. It's great to be a HUSKY!!! #huskypride Dear Parents,
I am writing in hopes of receiving your support to help Sra. Hurtado and I create a book nook in each of our classrooms. I was nominated by Mrs. Mazeau for an award, was chosen, and was presented with a $500 gift card for Lakeshore Teacher Supply store on Friday by the Altrusa Foundation of Chula Vista, which is a philanthropic group that supports teachers and encourages a love for literacy in our community. I split the reward with Sra. Hurtado in order for us to get a jump-start on our book nooks. We purchased book cubbies and labels to divide the books we currently have by Lexile, we purchased reading/comprehension activities for students to work on during literacy centers, and we purchased incentives to use to motivate students to keep reading and achieving. In order to make this all come together, we were hoping you could help us by getting a jump-start on Spring cleaning and send in any children’s books that you no longer want, dining chair cushions, sofa accent pillows, chairs, lamps, bean bag chairs, or any other items you may think would be useful in a classroom book nook. Students could use these items during our silent independent reading, or when they work on Achieve 3000 and spread out around the classroom and read on the floor. We thank you for your continued support all year and hope that in reaching out to you, we could make our vision come together for our classrooms. Below is just one idea I found on Pinterest. If any of you has a good eye for interior decor, you are welcome to come in and help as well. Thank you, all! -Sra. Josa This week of remembrance began with an assembly where we had the honor to meet Enrique S. Camarena's son as he shared the story of this true American hero. There wasn't a dry eye in the auditorium as Mr. Camarena shared memories of his father and the story of what eventually led to his death. He also challenged each of us sitting there to do as his father did... make an impact in our world. His father believed as a child, that he could make a difference, and that he did! Red Ribbon Week is celebrated by millions in America and around the world to help children make a commitment to remain drug-free throughout their lives.
For me, this conversation was all too familiar. On October 27 of last year, I got a phone call from one of my brothers informing me that my mother had passed away. Although I had only known her for 5 years, nobody could ever be quite ready for this type of news. The truth of the matter is that I didn't lose my mom to cancer, or an accident of some kind, rather, I lost her to a very potent weapon in this world today. A weapon that is sold on our streets, sold to teens, and is often the theme of popular songs. This weapon is drugs. My mother died of complications due to the hard use of drugs her entire life. She was only 52. I miss her every day and wish I could have one more moment with her. I shared about my mom with my students. I allowed them to see the pain, the sadness, the grief of a person, a real person, right before their eyes who has been directly impacted by the abuse of drugs by a family member. I urged them to make a promise to themselves that no matter how difficult life may get, that drugs will never be an option. This conversation, along with the assembly this morning were enough, I believe, to make an impact in the lives of these 10 year-olds. Josa's Jaguars pledge to be drug-free! "Minions tienen ojos grandes para ver... que las drogas no deben querer... ni ser parte de nuestro ser!" Our school's dual-immersion teams put together a successful ice cream social. This event was absolutely wonderful. I had a few good laughs with some parents, served ice cream to the little ones, and my children got to play on the playground with students. It was as though all was good in the world for this moment in time. Unlike some school events I have attended at other school, this one seemed flawless. All I saw were fudge-smeared smiles, and spoonfuls of ice cream piled in bowls with sprinkles and whipped cream on top! I look forward to this event in the future. It truly was a success.
From the start of the school year, I have been in awe of the amazing parent support from my students' families. I had always found that parent support and participation tend to dwindle away as I taught in the upper grades, but this year's class has proven that wrong!! Hedenkamp Husky Dual Immersion parents are not only support our instruction with follow-though at home, our parents take time our of their busy days to come in and offer a helping hand. As we prepare to head off to our Fall break, I just want to do a shout out to all the parents who have helped us out this far this school year!! You know who you are... your kindness is much appreciated. See you all in two weeks!
